RAS RANT

I am getting so very antsy, Peace Corps.
You have now had my medical kit for almost 7 weeks. I still haven’t heard anything from Medical. L
I am nominated for Asia in July/August. People with this nomination so far have been invited to the Philippines July 1st. The beginning of July is in less than 11 weeks. I believe the rule is that Peace Corps has to give you an invitation at least 6 weeks before you leave. If I am going to the Philippines, I will be leaving July 1st. That means I would have to have my invitation by May 20th. Now, there are less than 5 weeks until May 20th. Placement usually takes 6-8 weeks. AND I’m not even up to placement yet because I’m still not medically cleared! AHHHHHH!
I know that the Peace Corps goes through all of the applicants’ files in order of importance of country and job and whatnot. But I can’t help but be confused as to why people are getting invitations now for September and even October.
For the record, I am totally open to the idea that my nomination can change and I could be going to a different region at a later departure date. Actually... I might even prefer that. But I’m just dying to get some answers.
And if this isn’t an RAS rant, I don’t know what is.

  1. Most (but not all!) of the people getting invitations for September and October and people who missed their earlier nominations and got pushed back to this fall. I bet you will be getting medical clearance very soon! It took 11 weeks for me.

  2. Some people are getting invitations for the fall, but I don't think they're representative of most applicants. I talked to the education placement desk last week and they said they're still finishing May and getting around to June people. Remember to take into account which program is placing them - different ones are on different schedules.

  3. No news is good news when it comes to medical it seems! That's how it went for me. Good luck!!!! Also try not to stress about your nomination date. I was in the same boat and was pushed back. It turns out I landed my ideal placement so I have a feeling that things work out mysteriously for the best! I leave in 9 day for Panama :)

  4. All previous comments are consistent with my experience.
I waited 4 months for my medical clearance, then another 4 months for the Placement interview and an invitation. Now I have a 5 month wait for Staging. (It has now been 12 months since I submitted my application)
You might want to know about the PC instructions in one of their publications that state an applicant should contact their Recruiter if you have not heard from Placement by at least 8 weeks before your nominated departure date (yep, Placements are decided at least 8 weeks, not 6 weeks, prior to Staging). You are supposed to ask your Recruiter for the phone number of your Placement Specialist. I did that and had my invitation within a few month. You might want to read the details in my posting titled "Well . . ." dated March 7 in my blog at: http://palew.blogspot.com.
This will try your patience, but maintain PMA and be assured that it will work out.
    Best wishes.

  5. I totally understand what you're going through! Peace Corps has had my medical kit going on 11 weeks now. I sent an email at 6 weeks and was told review of my file had recently begun. I'm nominated for the Caribbean leaving in August..I'm getting antsy as well!
